Former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters faces possible prosecution after supporting banned Palestine Action

Former Pink Floyd songwriter Roger Waters could face prosecution after declaring his support for Palestine Action, a terrorist organization that has been banned by Parliament in the U.K.

Waters posted a video to X on Saturday, in which the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame inductee praised Palestine Action as a “great organization,” while also giving kudos to Bob Vylan, who led the Glastonbury Festival crowd in a chant, shouting, “Death, death to the IDF.”

Waters said in his video that he was in his studio and was working on a piece of brown cardboard with a Sharpie.

He then switched the camera from his face to the cardboard.

GOP BILL SEEKS TO BAN AND DEPORT VISA HOLDERS WHO SUPPORT HAMAS AMID WAVE OF ANTISEMITIC VIOLENCE IN AMERICA

“This says, ‘Roger Waters supports Palestine Action, 5th of July 2025. Parliament has been corrupted by agents of a genocidal foreign power. Stand up and be counted. It’s Now,'” Waters read. “This is the moment. I am Spartacus.”

“This is Independence Day, July 5th, 2025,” he continued. “I declare my independence from the government of the U.K., who’ve just designated Palestine Action a terrorist, proscribed terrorist organization.”

Waters said he supports Palestine Action, calling it a “great organization,” and noting that they are “nonviolent” and “absolutely not terrorists in any way.”

“They’re a nonviolent protest organization protesting the presence in the U.K. of Elbit Systems, who are an Israeli arms manufacturing organization,” he said. “All right. So, that’s that. I support Palestine Action, and I always will because that is the right thing to do.”

ISRAEL OBJECTS TO FOREIGN NATIONS SANCTIONING ITS OFFICIALS

He then turned his attention to others who support Palestine, like Bob Vylan, a punk-rap duo who led anti-Israel chants at the Glastonbury Festival late last month.

“We must support our brothers and sisters in Palestine and support them no matter what,” Waters said. “So good on you, what was your name? Vylan. Good on you, Vylan, and the rest of you who are standing up to be counted. I love you.”

Reuters reported that last week, the U.K. government moved to ban Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws after its activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and damaged two planes in protest of what the organization called Britain’s support for Israel.

EX-MUMFORD & SONS GUITARIST CRITICIZES MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR SILENCE AFTER BOULDER ANTISEMITIC ATTACK

After a parliamentary vote, the government proscribed the group as a terrorist organization, and the ban went into effect at midnight.

Under U.K. law, offenses include things like inviting support, expressing approval or displaying symbols of a banned group, and violations are punishable by up to 14 years behind bars and/or a fine.

There are currently 81 groups listed under anti-terrorism laws in Britain, including al-Qaeda, ISIS and Hamas.

Parliament’s Minister of State, Sir David Hanson, said after the amendment’s approval that Palestine Action released an “undercover manual” that encourages its members to create small groups and provides guidance about how to conduct activity against private companies and government buildings.

Hanson also said the manual explains how to operate covertly and evade arrest.

DAVID MARCUS: TIME TO BAN PRO-PALESTINE (HAMAS) GROUPS ON CAMPUS, JUST LIKE KKK

“The Government have assessed that Palestine Action promotes and encourages terrorism. This includes glorification of its attacks involving serious property damage on social media,” Hanson said. “I have to say that we would not tolerate this activity from organisations if they were motivated by Islamist or extreme right-wing ideologies, and therefore I cannot tolerate it from Palestine Action.”

“By implementing this measure, we will remove Palestine Action’s veil of legitimacy, tackle its financial support and degrade its efforts to recruit and radicalise people into committing terrorist activity in its name,” he added.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, which, according to the group’s site, is a “volunteer-led charity dedicated to exposing and countering antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of law,” shared Waters’ video on X shortly after it was posted by the former Pink Floyd member.

The group said it reviewed the post, adding that anyone who expresses support for it, contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000, is committing a criminal offense.

They also said they stand ready to privately prosecute offenders when authorities fail to act.

A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism told Fox News Digital, “The suggestion that the Jewish state wields excessive political influence is a breach of the International Definition of Antisemitism.”

“Roger Waters has a long history of promoting dangerous conspiratorial tropes,” the spokesperson said. “His declaration of support for Palestine Action, now a banned organisation, is his most legally provocative move yet. We expect the police to take action, and if they do not then we will.”

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and current New York City Mayor Eric Adams are each urging the other to drop their mayoral bids in the 2025 race against Democratic Party nominee Zohran Mamdani.

“I think that everyone should align behind the person who has won one as mayor,” Adams said Monday at a news conference.

Meanwhile, Cuomo’s top advisor argued in a statement that “we do not see any path to victory for Mayor Adams.”

Mamdani, the 33-year-old democratic socialist assemblyman from Queens, two weeks ago topped Cuomo by 12 points to win the Democratic Party mayoral primary. Mamdani instantly became the clear frontrunner in November’s general election in heavily blue New York City, where Democrats outnumber Republicans by roughly a six-to-one margin.

MAMDANI OFFICIALLY WINS PRIMARY, BUT CUOMO STAYING IN BATTLE FOR NEW YORK CITY MAYOR

With his victory over Cuomo and nine other Democratic candidates, Mamdani sent political shockwaves across the country, and took a big step towards becoming the first Muslim mayor of the nation’s most populous city.

Cuomo, the three-term governor who resigned from office in 2021 amid multiple scandals and who was aiming for a political comeback, had been the frontrunner in the mayoral primary race for months until Mamdani closed the gap in the closing weeks of the campaign.

MAMDANI’S POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE ROCKS DEMOCRATS

Mamdani will face off in November against Republican Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the volunteer crime-fighting patrols known as the Guardian Angels. Sliwa is the GOP nominee for a second straight election cycle.

Jim Walden, a former federal prosecutor running as an independent, is also on the ballot.

Adams, who won election as mayor in 2021 as a Democrat, is running as an independent. The mayor dropped his Democratic re-election bid earlier this year amid sinking poll numbers in the wake of multiple controversies.

While he acknowledged Mamdani’s victory on primary night, Cuomo left the door open for running as an independent candidate, which election rules in New York State permit.

REPUBLICANS USE MAMDANI BOMBSHELL VICTORY OVER CUOMO AS AMMUNITION TO BLAST DEMOCRATS AS EXTREMISTS

And Cuomo recently let a deadline pass for candidates who had already qualified to run as independents to decline that independent ballot line.

“I think Andrew and Curtis should rally behind me. I won as mayor. You know, I’m the only one that’s in this race right now that has ever won as mayor,” Adams said at his news conference.

And in an interview with CNBC, Adams said that in a recent conversation, the former governor asked him to step aside.

“I said, ‘Andrew, are you that level of arrogant? I’m the sitting mayor!'” Adams said of his conversation with Cuomo. “I’m the sitting mayor of New York City when you just lost to Zohran by 12 points.”

“They heard your message. You lost,” Adams added. “That’s the highest level of arrogance.”

THESE DEMOCRATS HAVEN’T ENDORSED MAMDANI, BUT THEY’RE DEFENDING HIM AGAINST TRUMP

Adams’ poll numbers were sinking even before he was indicted last year on five counts, which accused the mayor of bribery and fraud as part of an alleged “long-running” scheme to personally profit from contacts with foreign officials.

The mayor made repeated overtures to President Donald Trump, and the Justice Department earlier this year dismissed the corruption charges, so Adams could potentially work with the Trump administration on its illegal immigration crackdown.

“Mayor Adams did not run in the Democratic primary because he knew he was anathema to Democrats and unelectable. Nothing has changed,” top Cuomo advisor Rich Azzopardi charged in a statement on Monday.

And Azzopardi highlighted a proposal made last week by Walden that an independent study should be conducted to see which candidate would be the strongest to take on Mamdani, with the weaker contenders agreeing to drop out.

Azzopardi argued that Walden “correctly points out that if he, Mayor Adams, and Governor Cuomo all run, it all but ensures a socialist victory. Jim proposed a fair independent survey be taken in September to determine whose candidacy and vision for New York is strongest in a one-on-one race in November.”

“This is the time to put aside the usual political selfishness and agree to do what is truly best for all New Yorkers,” Azzopardi added. “While we review this proposal, we call on other candidates to do the same.”

Walden on Monday said in an interview on Fox News Radio’s “Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla” that a Mamdani victory in November “would be terrible for the city and would sit us back a whole generation so I proposed a poll in either late September early October.”

“If the candidates agreed to this we would all agree on a poll that would happen and it would be winner take all,” he explained.

Mamdani surged to a primary victory thanks to an energetic campaign that put a major focus on affordability and New York City’s high cost of living.

Endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — New York City’s most prominent progressive — and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the two-time Democratic presidential runner-up, helped Mamdani solidify support on the left.

Mamdani made smart use of social media platforms, including TikTok, as he engaged low-propensity voters. He proposed eliminating fares to ride New York City’s vast bus system, making CUNY (City University of New York) “tuition-free,” freezing rents on municipal housing, offering “free childcare” for children up to age 5, and setting up government-run grocery stores.

And thanks in part to the efforts of a massive grassroots army of volunteers, he rode a wave of support from younger and progressive voters to catapult into first place.

Mamdani’s victory has reignited long-standing debates within the Democratic Party between its more moderate and progressive wings, and between outsiders and the establishment.

And it’s reignited the debate over whether the party’s policy, or messaging, was to blame for last November’s election setbacks, when Democrats lost control of the White House and Senate, and failed to win back the House majority.

A shooter who allegedly opened fire on Border Patrol agents outside a federal building in McAllen, Texas, has been identified by authorities as 27-year-old Michigan resident Ryan Louis Mosqueda.

An active shooter armed with tactical gear and a rifle opened fire upon Border Patrol agents as they arrived at a Border Patrol annex facility in McAllen, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley on Monday. Law enforcement believes the attack was a purposeful ambush targeting Border Patrol officials.

In a press conference after the shooting, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez identified the suspected shooter as Mosqueda, saying he allegedly opened fire on the agents, firing “many, many dozens of rounds” at the building.

Rodriguez confirmed that the suspect was killed on the scene by agents returning fire.

According to the police chief, there is no known motive yet for why Mosqueda allegedly opened fire on Border Patrol agents.

He said the suspect is associated with an address in Michigan and that he arrived at the scene driving a vehicle with Michigan plates. He also mentioned that the suspect’s car had spray-painting on it with “some language on it,” possibly Latin, that he could not decipher.

According to Rodriguez, Mosqueda was reported missing from an address in nearby Weslaco and “an hour and a few minutes later he was at this particular location, opening fire on a federal building.”

In a statement emailed to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for FBI San Antonio said that McAllen police received calls of shots being heard by a local Border Patrol facility near the McAllen International Airport at approximately 5:53 a.m.

The spokesperson said the armed suspect, who they did not identify as Mosqueda but rather an “adult male,” “engaged the law enforcement officers responding to the scene and officers returned fire.”

According to the spokesperson, one responding officer was injured in the gunfire and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The officer is now in stable condition.

A recent study from Stanford Medicine that “totally surprised” researchers highlighted what could be a promising approach to slowing Parkinson’s disease progression.

The research, published in the journal Science Signaling, took a closer look at enzymes — proteins in the body that speed up chemical reactions and are essential for digestion, liver function and other key functions, according to Cleveland Clinic — and their role in Parkinson’s.

The team found that targeting a certain enzyme helped to restore neuron and cell communication in mice.

MUSIC CONDUCTOR WITH PARKINSON’S SEES SYMPTOMS IMPROVE WITH DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION

Lead author Suzanne Pfeffer, PhD, the Emma Pfeiffer Merner Professor in Medical Sciences and a professor of biochemistry at Stanford, told Fox News Digital that the team was “totally surprised that we saw as much improvement as we did.”

In about 25% of Parkinson’s cases, the culprit is some form of genetic mutation. One of the most common mutations creates an overactive enzyme called LRRK2, according to a Stanford press release.

When there is too much LRRK2 activity, it changes the structure of the brain cells, disrupting important communication between neurons and cells. This system is crucial to movement, motivation and decision-making, according to the researchers.

The goal of the study was to determine whether a specific molecule — the MLi-2 LRRK2 kinase inhibitor — could reverse the effect of overactive enzymes.

PARKINSON’S PATIENTS WHO TAKE ‘MAGIC MUSHROOMS’ SEE KEY BENEFITS, STUDY FINDS

Using mice that had the genetic mutation that causes overactive LRRK2 and also had symptoms consistent with early Parkinson’s disease, the scientists tried feeding them the inhibitor for two weeks.

There were initially no changes detected in brain structure, signaling or function of the dopamine neurons.

However, after three months of eating the inhibitor, mice affected by the overactive enzyme appeared to have restored their neurons to the point where they were virtually the same as those without the genetic mutation, the study found.

“Findings from this study suggest that inhibiting the LRRK2 enzyme could stabilize the progression of symptoms if patients can be identified early enough,” Pfeffer said in the press release.

The study did have some limitations, the researchers acknowledged.

“This was in mice, not people, but our current results indicate that similar pathways are important in humans,” Pfeffer told Fox News Digital.

While the study focused on a specific genetic form of the disease, overactive LRRK2 is also present in other cases, meaning this treatment could help multiple types of Parkinson’s patients and possibly those with other neurodegenerative diseases, the reseachers claimed.

Looking ahead, the team plans to investigate whether other forms of Parkinson’s could benefit.

Parkinson’s — a disease that involves the slow death of dopamine-producing neurons, leading to symptoms like tremors and stiffness — affects nearly one million Americans, according to the Parkinson’s Foundation, which has offices in New York and Miami.

Experts agree that early intervention is key, as Parkinson’s symptoms often appear years after the disease begins.

Identifying and treating at-risk individuals sooner could potentially halt or reverse neuron loss.

“These findings suggest that it might be possible to improve, not just stabilize, the condition of patients with Parkinson’s disease,” Pfeffer said.

The researcher told Fox News Digital that it’s important to encourage patients to undergo genetic testing to learn more about their suitability for clinical trials and future treatments.

The study was funded by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s initiative and the United Kingdom Medical Research Council.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said in a new interview that she is most inspired when she sees people obstructing ICE.

“Some of the most inspiring things have been when people encircle courtrooms and refuse to allow ICE agents in,” Jayapal said during a conversation with Joy Reid on Friday’s episode of “The Joy Reid Show.”

“There are all kinds of nonviolent resistance tactics that we have to use,” Jayapal added. “And I’ve started something called Resistance Lab… It’s a training on really the documented most effective ways to counter democratic backsliding, nonviolent resistance tactics to build that movement.”

ICE DIRECTOR SAYS PROGRESSIVE DEM SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO VOTERS AFTER CALLING AGENCY A ‘TERRORIST FORCE’

The Resistance Lab website, which includes a page on Jayapal’s new book, “USE THE POWER YOU HAVE: A Brown Woman’s Guide to Politics and Political Change,” is advertising a “Virtual Organizing Training 1.0” on July 13.

The website says that Jayapal “knew we need a way to turn our anger, fear, and frustration into action and progress. That’s exactly why she launched The Resistance Lab, an in-depth organizing training to build our movement and give you the tools you need in this moment. The scary truth is that democracies fall in a matter of months. So this is an immediate, urgent matter – and we need to quickly build our capacity to resist.”

‘SQUAD’ DEM SAYS TRUMP MAY JAIL PEOPLE ‘FOR PRACTICING DIVERSITY’ AFTER VISITING ICE-DETAINED STUDENTS

“We’ve already trained over 10,000 people in all 50 states,” Jayapal told Reid. “And the next one’s coming up on July 13. So, we’re going to keep doing those, because that is what we have to realize is the United States has been complacent for too long. We think that maybe these checks and balances were supposed to keep us safe, but we’re seeing that they assume that people on the other side also care about the Constitution. Not the case right now.”

The Washington State lawmaker has been critical of ICE, calling it a “terrorist force” in a recent Instagram post

She then defended the comment during an interview with CNN, where she was asked to respond to the White House’s criticism of her post. She retorted the White House “owes an apology” to Americans.

Jayapal also called ICE’s immigration enforcement “outrageous,” “unconstitutional” and “illegal” during her CNN segment defending the comments she made, calling ICE a “terrorist force.”

ICE Acting Director Todd Lyon responded to Jayapal’s comments.

“Rep. Jayapal’s glorification of the harassment of law enforcement officers and of ignoring our nation’s laws is particularly concerning coming from a sitting congresswoman. Moreover, these comments came on July 4, just hours before a coordinated attack at an ICE facility in Texas, during which a local law enforcement officer was shot,” Lyon told Fox News Digital. “And today — also in Texas— a violent attacker shot a U.S. Border Patrol officer. Inciting activists is not a game; there are very real consequences. I’m relieved that both these officers are expected to recover, but how much more dangerous rhetoric can we as a nation tolerate before it’s too late?”

A former Army captain and father of two is fighting for his life after being struck by a boat propeller while snorkeling in the Bahamas during a family vacation.

On June 30, Brent Slough of Prosper, Texas, was snorkeling in the crystal clear water near the shores of Exuma when “this boat came out of nowhere — and never stopped,” his wife, Whitney Slough, told Dallas outlet WFAA.

“They know they hit him. They saw him snorkeling,” she said. “And they drove off.”

FATHER LEAPS INTO INTO OCEAN AFTER DAUGHTER FALLS FROM DISNEY CRUISE SHIP DECK: REPORTS

Brent, 42, was hit “right underneath the buttocks and the legs and just sliced him there,” Whitney recalled to the outlet.

She recalled hearing his cries from the water: “We hear Brent screaming, ‘Help me, help me, help me.’ We didn’t realize that he was struck by the boat.”

Family, friends and good Samaritans jumped into action and hoisted Brent out of the water

“What happened last night is still almost impossible to process. Despite multiple 911 calls, no ambulance ever came,” Whitney wrote in a Facebook post. “In that moment of chaos and fear, it was our neighbors and strangers on the beach who stepped in. You held us up …quite literally saved Brent’s life and I will never forget it.”

He was taken to a local hospital before the family paid for him to be flown to a Miami hospital on July 1. There, Brent underwent a four-hour operation.

Whitney shared the extent of the injuries with the outlet, saying that the devastating cuts were so deep that the doctors cannot stitch his wounds because they’re so deep and have been packing them instead.

“We’re lucky that he’s alive,” Whitney told the outlet. “And there’s no way that they should be able to get away with this.”

In an update Sunday, Whitney wrote on Facebook that Brent was moved to an intermediate ICU.

“A step in the right direction. Praise God,” she wrote. “Please keep the prayers coming!”

Brent was an infantryman in the regular Army from May 2005 to April 2011, an Army spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital.

He deployed to Iraq from May 2007 to July 2008 and was a captain when he left.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Parachutist Badge.

A flight passenger made an observation after setting off an alarm while going through airport security — which sparked a “sweaty” conversation online.

Posted in the “r/tsa” forum on Reddit, the message was bluntly titled, “My crotch got flagged twice, thoughts?”

“I flew for the first time in 15 years this week and both airports flagged my crotch at the arms-up scanner,” read the post.

The user added, “I don’t care about the pat-down. They were polite and professional and it doesn’t bother me, but I’m wondering what did it.”

Plenty of other people took to the comments section to speculate about what could have set off the alarm.

“It can alarm on heavy sweat (experienced that once myself), which will probably be somewhat more common now that we’re in the summer months,” claimed one user.

Another user asked, “Were you sweating?” to which the passenger responded, “Probably a little. I’m terrified of flying, so I was nervous.”

“Last time I flew out of my home airport of Tampa, I got searched, too,” said a different person on Reddit. “The guard said something unnerving like ‘swamp rot’ or ‘swamp crotch’ or something similarly embarrassing.”

Another user remarked, “I didn’t read all the comments, but this happens to me when I’m late for a flight because I’m sweaty.”

“If you [go] through the machine that makes you put your hands above your head, it senses moisture,” the same person added.

“I’ve been stopped for additional screening twice.”

“Could be: clothes (baggy etc.), sweat, position (not on footprints, too wide or too narrow), zipper, too many layers, reflective stuff, ghosts, etc.,” commented one user.

A spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) told Fox News Digital that sweat could play a role in setting off alarms.

“Added moisture from a person’s body can alter the density of clothing, so it is possible perspiration may cause our Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines to alarm,” said the spokesperson.

“If this occurs, the passenger may need to undergo additional screening, such as a pat-down in the area of the body where the AIT alarmed, to ensure there is no threat,” the spokesperson added.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon told California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday that he will be hearing from Attorney General Pam Bondi after the state was found to be in violation of Title IX.

The California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) rejected the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights’ (OCR) proposed resolution agreement following transgender athlete controversies in high school athletics over the course of the school year.

Linda McMahon shared CDE general counsel Len Garfinkel’s letter to OCR regional director Bradley R. Burke on Monday.

“The California Department of Education (CDE) received the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights’ (OCR’s) June 25, 2025 Letter of Finding and Proposed Resolution Agreement in the above-referenced OCR matter,” the letter read.

“The CDE respectfully disagrees with OCR’s analysis, and it will not sign the Proposed Resolution Agreement.”

McMahon also shared the CIF’s response from its general counsel, Diane Marshall-Freeman.

“The office of the General Counsel for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) is in receipt of your letter, dated June 25, 2025, directed to Dr. Ronald W. Nocetti, the Executive Director of the CIF,” Marshall-Freeman wrote. “I write in response to your request that the CIF in form you ‘in writing by 12:00 p.m. non, eastern time, July 7, 2025,’ as to whether the CIF will sign the United States Department of Education’s, Office for Civil Rights’ (‘OCR’) proposed resolution agreement in the above-entitled matter.

“In reply to your request, please be advised that the CIF concurs with the response of the California Department of Education (“CDE”) submitted to your office earlier today, July 7, 2025. I have attached a copy of the CDE’s response for your references. Consequently, the CIF will not be signing the proposed resolution agreement.”

McMahon’s message to Newsom was clear.

“California has just REJECTED our resolution agreement to follow federal law and keep men out of women’s sports,” she wrote on X. “Turns out Gov. Newsom’s acknowledgment that ‘it’s an issue of fairness’ was empty political grandstanding.

“@CAgovernor, you’ll be hearing from @AGPamBondi.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Newsom’s office for comment.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced late last month that the CIF and the CDE were in violation of Title IX.

The announcement came weeks after transgender high school track and field athlete AB Hernandez won medals in girls competitions during the California state championships. The transgender athlete’s participation in the events sparked nationwide outrage, specifically from President Donald Trump after he signed the “No Men in Women’s Sports” executive order, which prohibits transgender athletes from competing against biological girls and women in sports.

The Education Department said the CIF and the CDE had 10 days to agree to the agency’s proposed resolution agreement, part of which stated, “to each female to whom an individual recognition is restored, CDE will send a personalized letter to that girl or woman apologizing on behalf of the state of California for allowing her educational experience to be marred by sex discrimination.”

Additionally, “The CDE will issue a Notice to all recipients of federal funding (Recipients) that operate interscholastic athletic programs in California requiring them to comply with Title IX. This will specify that Title IX and its implementing regulations forbids schools from allowing males from participating in female sports and from occupying female intimate facilities, and that Recipients must adopt biology-based definitions of the words ‘male’ and ‘female.’

WOMEN INVOLVED IN SUPREME COURT CASES OVER TRANS ATHLETES OPEN UP ON FIGHTING HISTORIC LEGAL BATTLE

“The CDE and CIF will rescind any guidance that advised local school districts or CIF members to permit male athletes to participate in women’s and girls sports to reflect that Title IX preempts state law when state law conflicts with Title IX.

“The CDE will require each Recipient and CIF to submit to CDE an annual certification that the Recipient and CIF have complied with Title IX. Accordingly, CDE will also propose to OCR a Monitoring Plan to ensure that Recipients are fully complying with Title IX.”

Newsom’s office responded to the initial announcement, brushing off the Trump administration’s threats to defund California.

Newsom previously talked about transgender participation in girls sports back in March with prominent conservative Charlie Kirk.

“The young man who’s about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports, that shouldn’t happen,” Kirk said. “You, as the governor, should step out and say no. Would you do something like that? Would you say no men in female sports?”

“I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom told Kirk. “I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”

Kirk pressed Newsom on whether he would condemn the athlete in question from Jurupa Valley High School after the athlete won another event at the time. Newsom did not directly address the win but said “it’s a fairness issue.”

“So, that’s easy to call out the unfairness of that,” he said. “There’s also humility and grace. … These poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression. And the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well.

“So, both things I can hold in my hand. How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think, you know, is inherent in you but not always expressed on the issue?”

Newsom further explained his point of view in a press conference on April 2 when asked whether there should be a law to prohibit males from competing in girls and women’s sports.

“And I’m about as transparent about this as anybody out there, particularly in my party, on this, and to the extent someone can and do it in a way that’s respectful and responsible and could find a kind of balance, then I’m open to that discussion. … You’re talking about a very small number of people, a very small number of athletes, and my responsibility is to address the pressing issues of our time.

“And this, I think, has been colored in and weaponized by the right to be 10 times, 100 times bigger than it is, and so my focus is on a myriad of other issues in this state. And to the extent that someone could find that right balance, I would embrace those conversations and the dignity that hopefully presents themselves in that conversation, meaning the humanity around that conversation, not the politics around that conversation.”

“The Real Prince’s full brother Gimme A Prince was crowned Champion Sprinter two seasons back so there was always a question mark hanging over his ability to stay the 2200m trip of the July,” Hollywoodbets said in a statement.

“That was answered in no uncertain manner as The Real Prince fought off Eight On Eighteen who was attempting to become the first three-year-old to win the Grade One  World Sports Betting Cape Met and the July in the same season.”

The early race pace was set by Oriental Charm, who kept the field bunched up. Eight On Eighteen, drawn at 11, struggled to find the rail early on but surged ahead coming into the final turn. However, Zackey’s measured ride on The Real Prince proved decisive as he closed the gap and edged ahead in a head-to-head finish.

It was a nod of the heads at the line but Kannemeyer had his fourth July winner in the bag and his second for Lady Christine Laidlaw and Khaya Stables.

Reflecting on the strategic preparation, Kannemeyer said: “Where were we going to place him? The first time we tried him over a mile he won by six lengths. Great run in the Drill Hall.”

“If we run him in the Gold Challenge and run fourth the handicapper is going to be looking for you. You have to come in at the right time with the right weight and we got the right draw.”

While the track hosted high drama, the infield was alive with fierce competition as fashionistas battled it out on the Pulse Stage. Entrants dazzled in four categories: Most Striking Couple, Classic Racewear – Female, Classic Racewear – Male, and Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator.

Judges Kathrin Kidger, Sandile “The Duke” Mngadi, and Hollywood Foundation spokesperson Vuyisile Ngobese faced a tough task selecting winners from the talent pool.

Durban designer Pregasen Govender made a notable comeback after six years, drawing inspiration from the Indian Ocean, traditional jewellery, Japanese design elements and local flora.

“Durban’s greatness lies in its beaches and its culture,” Govender said. “My designs are a celebration of that unique blend.”

In the main fashion categories, Happiness Mkhwanazi won Classic Racewear – Female, followed by Ciara Mikkelsen and Nomonde Langa. The Classic Racewear – Male category saw Mnotho Ngema crowned winner, ahead of Siphesihle Mkhize and Athenkosi Mfungula.

Pamela Shabane and Larnelle Maddocks won Most Striking Couple, with Kevin Ellis and Gareth Greaves taking second, and Kish Ramdewu and Cherilee Thangalan in third. Nirvana Nolene took the top honour in the Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator category.

The event also spotlighted emerging talent in the Hollywoodbets Young Designer Awards. Andile Cele from uMgungundlovu TVET College took first place with her Ndebele-inspired design influenced by Dr Esther Mahlangu.

“I am flabbergasted,” Cele said. “This is beyond amazing.”

The 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July broke records due to its significant economic impact, with estimates by the eThekwini Municipality indicating it would contribute some R700 million to the city’s GDP, while event attendance reached a peak with approximately 50,000 fans descending on the racecourse.

Betting activity also set new benchmarks, with tote betting opening to record pools, including a R20 million jackpot and a R15 million Pick 6 carryover, according to Hollywoodbets.
